Building Exterior The former Chester Power Station, located along the Delaware River next to the Commodore Barry Bridge, is an imposing structure. It was built in 1917 at a time when potential customers did not trust the reliability and safety of electric power. To instill trust and confidence, the power plant was built in a grand neoclassical style. Now, the building has been transformed into Synygy's world headquarters. The 200-foot high coal towers add to the building's scale. The cranes were once used to move coal from barges into the top of the towers, where the coal then flowed into railcars, which then moved along tracks on the top floor of the building to fire the boilers that were used to create steam to turn the turbines that generated electricity.
Lobby and Reception The heavy copper doors of the power plant, which have been restored to their original condition, lead to Synygy's 40-foot high lobby located in what is known as the Switch House, the part of the power plant that once contained executive offices, worker shower rooms, the power plant control room, and two floors of mechanical equipment that regulated the flow of electricity out of the power plant.
Executive Briefing Center The brains of the former power plant-way before the creation of computers-consisted of large gauges, switches, and mechanical control systems on the third floor of the Switch House overlooking Turbine Hall. Today, the former control room has been converted into Synygy's Executive Briefing Center (EBC). The EBC is where prospective clients come to learn about the brains behind Synygy's solutions.
Office Space Synygy's open office environment promotes communication and teamwork. Most of the office space is located in the Boiler House, the part of the power plant that housed a group of massive, five-story, coal-fired boilers that turned water into steam to turn the turbines that generated power. Rather than steam, our professional services and software development staff power Synygy. The Boiler House furniture system is laid out in what appears to be a random arrangement of 120-degree walls and desk surfaces. Additional office space is located in the Switch House and what is called the Turbine Hall Addition, a part of the building that was added in the 1920's when more electric-generating capacity was needed (which explains why the building's massive columns that was once outside the building are now inside the room). Like Turbine Hall, the ceilings are very high and the room comes with its own crane.
Turbine Hall Meeting Space Turbine Hall, which was once home to a dozen huge electric-generating turbines, is nearly the size of a football field and has a 100-foot high ceiling. Now, the turbines are gone. In their place, a data center, cafe and kitchen, large meeting rooms, and a mezzanine meeting space that can hold 1000 people for events or 400 people for dinner have been created. Turbine Hall also includes a stage, dance floor, video bar and game room, four theater-size projection screens, extensive lighting, a video studio, and a computer-based audio/video/lighting control system. The facility is available for rent. For more information, visit: www.turbinehall.com
Data Center Synygy's new state-of-the-art data center is located prominently in Turbine Hall. Now, instead of turbines, the computers in the data center power Synygy's hosted software-as-service and managed service solutions.
Cafe & Coffee Lounge Much more than a typical company cafeteria, Turbine Hall Cafe is more like a combination of a restaurant and upscale coffee lounge. From healthy entrees to made-to-order rustic pizzas, salads, and gourmet sandwiches, the food has received rave reviews-and the company subsidy makes it affordable. For employees who are Starbucks coffee lovers, any beverage they could buy at Starbucks can be had at Synygy-at a 25% savings. Also from the beverage bar are fruit smoothies and protein drinks.
Bar and Game Room Most Synygy employees like to play as hard as they work, and Herbert's Bar and Game Room, located on a mezzanine in the Turbine Hall gallery area, is the perfect place for ping pong tournaments, beer and wine tastings, and other special events.
Gym The free gym has become a hit for those employees who want their bodies to be in as great shape as their minds.
Views With its riverfront location, the views from everywhere are just as amazing as the building itself-views of the Commodore Barry Bridge, the nature preserve in New Jersey across the river, and the large ships that float by our windows. Synygy employees can eat lunch or, using our wireless network, work outside on the wharf adjoining the river.
